Vikingur Gota and Lincoln Red Imps will lock horns with each other in the UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign this week. The first leg of the first round of the qualifier between the Faroe Islands Premier League club and the Gibraltar Football League outfit will be held at the Vio Djupumyrar Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 7pm UK time on Tuesday.
Vikingur Gota
Vikingur Gota are one of the biggest clubs in the Faroe Islands. Founded in 2008, the Vikings have won the Faroe Islands Premier League title three times – in 2016, 2017 and 2024. Vikingur have also won the Faroe Islands Cup on six occasions and the Faroe Islands Super Cup five times.
The Vikings stand a chance of qualifying for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League next season after winning the Faroe Islands Premier League title last season. They reached the second qualifying round back in the 2027-18 season, but got knocked out of the opening round in 2018-19.
While Jóhan Petur Poulsen’s side are the reigning Faroe Islands champions, they are not doing particularly well in the 2025 campaign. Vikingur are as low as fifth in the league table at the moment with 24 points from 16 matches, as many as 22 points behind leaders Klaksvíkar Ítróttarfelag.
Team News:
Vikingur Gota are likely to line up in a 3-4-3 formation against the Lincoln Red Imps. Reynatrod will be in goal for the home team. Gregersen, Jonhardsson and Svensson will be the three defenders. Vatnhamar, Bardarson, Skola and Atlason will be the four midfielders. Nielsen, Radosavljevic, and Kallsberg will form part of a three-pronged attack.
Lincoln Red Imps
Lincoln Red Imps are one of the biggest and most recognisable names in Gibraltar. The Red Imps are the most successful club in their country, winning the Gibraltar Football League a record 29 times, including 14 successive titles between 2003 and 2026.
The Red Imps won the Gibraltar Football League last season and will feature in the qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League this season. In 2014, they became the first team from Gibraltar to play in the qualifying stage, and in 2021, they became the first ever side from their country to feature in the group stages of a major European club competition when they qualified for the UEFA Europa Conference League.
While The Red Imps have more European experience than Vikingur Gota, they are on a summer break, so the players may not be as match-sharp as the home team’s. That could play a major factor, at least in the first leg.
